They anticipate trends and dictate new ones, reaching the status of contemporary muses. The right ingredients to become a fashion icon? Popularity helps, but it is not enough on its own: an it-girl not only needs class and style, but she must have such a strong identity as to leave a mark and communicate a unique and recognizable taste. Here are the top 5 contemporary style icons.

Victoria Beckham: Casual icon

Born in 1976, Victoria Caroline Adams, better known as Victoria Beckham, has been a true style symbol since the Spice Girls days, the all-female British pop band that made her famous in the 90s. Among all her band mates, in fact, Victoria was always the most attentive to fashion, personally choosing the outfits to be worn on stage, preferring sober and monochromatic outfits to those given to her for public appearances. When her music career ended in 1999, Victoria married the well-known footballer David Beckham wearing a gorgeous Vera Wang dress. In 2008, she launched her first collection, proving to have great talent as a designer. She prefers minimal but refined looks, her innate ability is transforming basic items into authentic must-have garments. The key word of her line is ‘essentiality’. A few simple items make up her collections: a white T-shirt with oversized trousers, structured jacket with masculine trousers, maxi sweater and maxi skirt, in most cases combined in a colour blocking style, that’s to say pairing two opposite shades of the colour wheel to create unexpected visual effects.

Olivia Palermo: Urban-Chic it-girl

Born and raised in New York, Olivia Palermo is one of the most imitated fashion icons ever. Actress, model and blogger, the mood on which she built her style is original and sophisticated. Olivia became known thanks to the MTV reality The City, subsequently she appeared on numerous fashion magazine covers and worked as a model around the world. In 2009, she launched her first jewellery collection and in 2011, her blog. Hers is a fresh and always impeccable urban-chic style: she knows how to combine garments proposing unusual and strong combinations, which are never excessive, and she is very skilled in mixing high street garments with vintage and high fashion accessories. She often sports colourful looks, made up of mini dresses and patterned skirts paired with contrasting tops or sweaters: but she also looks super refined in jeans: a truly unique elegance!

Lou Doillon: Nonconformist icon

Lou Doillon’s class is in her DNA. Daughter of actress-icon Jane Birkin and director Jacques Doillon, she perfectly incarnates her heritage. Model, actress, designer, sometimes even photographer, musician and painter, Lou’s style is eclectic and unconventional. Her debut happened when she was only 5 years old, playing alongside her mother in Kung-Fu Master. Success in the movie business, however, came in 1998, with the film Trop (peu) d’amour, directed by her father. Since then, she was part of the cast of films and selected TV series, appearing in controversial, difficult and often unexpected roles. Lou lent her beauty to various advertising campaigns and was the muse of designer labels and chains in the fashion industry. Hers is an all-natural elegance and her personal style knows no rules, ranging from preppy to glam rock, with personal touches and an ease and class that only a few have. One of her style allies? Total black.

Alexa Chung: Radical-Chic emblem

Born in 1983, British with Chinese origins, Alexa Chung has been a model and TV presenter since 2003. Many brands wanted her as the face of their campaigns  or designer for their capsule collections and she is always gracing the front row at fashion shows wearing designer creations. Her look is simple but with that extra touch that allowed her to become a fashion guru. In May of last year, she presented her first collection of clothing characterized by a mood halfway between bon ton and rock & roll. Alexa is always flawless, and manages to be super glamorous in any occasion with her radical and bon ton style, distinctive of a British girl. A typical Chung look is made of a shirt, shorts and ankle boots.

Charlotte Casiraghi: Style Princess

An unparalleled beauty and timeless charm, inherited from grandmother Grace Kelly, Charlotte Casiraghi, born from the liaison between Caroline of Monaco and Stefano Casiraghi, with her looks – essential and chic – always gives us valuable style lessons. Shy, reserved, in 2013 she was chosen by Gucci as the testimonial for Gucci Cosmetics and participated in the “forever now” advertising campaign. Charlotte Casiraghi is considered one of the most elegant women in the world, she can go from high street to couture with that nonchalance that only a real fashion icon has, because she manages to transform even the most basic garment into pure elegance thanks to her amazing charm: Charlotte is really a modern style princess! The looks that made us dream? Surely, those by Gucci, her favorite brand.
